UPDATE: RCMP still on scene at 30-vehicle highway pile-up near Carstairs

UPDATE: As of 2:30 p.m., RCMP estimate that there were 25-30 vehicles involved in this morning's highway pile-up. One driver was transported by ground ambulance with unknown injuries.

UPDATE:

Following this morning's multi-vehicle pile-up near Carstairs, RCMP have issued an afternoon update, advising that two south-bound lanes and one north-bound lane are now open on Highway II at Highway 581.

"However, traffic is moving very slow at this time," the update stated. "It is estimated that emergency personnel will be on scene for another hour."

At this time, RCMP estimate that there were 25-30 vehicles involved in the pile-up. One driver was transported by ground ambulance with unknown injuries.

No further information is available at this time.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Airdrie Rural RCMP, and emergency medical services are currently on scene at a serious multi-vehicle collision on Highway II at Highway 581, near Carstairs.

According to a detachment press release, the collision occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. this morning (Jan. 27). The north-bound lanes on Highway II are currently closed, and south-bound traffic has been reduced to one lane.

"RCMP is encouraging motorists to avoid travel in this area," the release stated.

A photo of the scene showed a multi-vehicle pile-up with several semi-trucks and pick-up trucks involved.

This will be updated as more information becomes available.
