Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) responded to reports of a possible carbon monoxide (CO) incident in the 2000 Block of 4 Kingsland Close S.E. May 15. AFD reported there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

According to a press release from the City of Airdrie, firefighters responded around 7:20 p.m. that evening. On arriving at the scene, they found residents of the building had evacuated the three-storey apartment complex.

Following air quality testing, emergency crews found elevated levels of CO on all floors, and the building's fire alarm system was used to evacuate remaining residents.

Working with ATCO and the building's maintenance staff, AFD determined one of the buildings two boilers had malfunctioned, resulting in the release of the dangerous gas.

"Once the problem was isolated and controlled, firefighters went floor to floor clearing the common spaces and individual apartments of residual CO," the press release said.

Final air quality readings were taken approximately three hours after the incident began, and AFD deemed the building was safe, allowing residents to return to their homes.

The incident has prompted AFD to remind local residents that CO detectors are "vital in protecting lives from the deadly gas."
