Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) crews were summoned to the site of an electrical fire April 23.

According to a press release from the department, fire crews received reports of a fire in a residence in the 700 block of Allen Street at 11:20 a.m., and on arriving at the scene, found a blaze in an electrical junction box on the exterior wall of an end unit in a five-unit condominium complex.

"Due to the area still being energized, firefighters made their initial attack with a dry chemical fire extinguisher," the release stated.

Firefighters temporarily evacuated 12 residents from the five residential units to the street, and FortisAlberta and ATCO were dispatched to assist with managing the building's utilities.

"Firefighters completed extinguishing the fire and then entered each residence to determine if smoke or fire had extended inside," the release stated. "The fire was contained to one exterior wall."

Additionally, two units were ventilated with large fans because of elevated carbon monoxide levels resulting from smoke.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire as well as final damage estimates are being investigated by the Fire Prevention Bureau. Six pieces of fire apparatus and 16 firefighters were used to combat the blaze.
