We need to make Airdrie better, not bigger

Dear editor,

When Chelsea Stone is stuck in traffic she needs to repeat to herself, “growth is good,” over and over until she believes it.

Chelsea, when the schools are overcrowded, tell yourself growth is good. When crime and vandalism rise, tell yourself growth is good. When your property taxes rise year after year, tell yourself growth is good. When your rates for water, sewer and other city services increase, forget what you’ve heard about growth offsetting the increased costs of services and tell yourself growth is good. When you see homelessness and beggars in Airdrie’s downtown, tell yourself that growth is good. When Airdrie annexes thousands more acres of farmland, try to forget your choice to live in a small community and tell yourself that growth is good.

And Chelsea, if you find that even repeating, “growth is good,” many times per day does not convince you that it is a really, really good thing, then ask your local politicians to look at communities that have chosen to limit their growth.

This fall, try to find councillor candidates that want to make Airdrie a better city instead of a bigger city.

John McMurray, Airdrie
