Pave or preserve - the totality of our decision

Dear editor,

I am one of the 37,000 most fortunate human beings on the planet.

I live in Rocky View - the best part of the best city area of the best province of the best country in the world. My wife and I have had the immense good fortune of having all five of our kids grow up here. We have been here for 25 years. We would like to stay for at least another 25.

In a few days, all 37,000 of us will collectively decide what happens to this lovely, lovely place. We can pave it by re-electing the current council, or we can choose the challengers and preserve it.

In the extraordinarily unlikely case that it ever becomes necessary to make Rocky View into a city, we can still do it later…much, much later, but once it’s done, it’s gone for good. Once it’s paved, we won’t get it back - ever. What we will get is an even larger increase to the massive debt the current council has saddled us with in their unyielding efforts to urbanize the County at all costs. When the ink is dry on the massive development plans, we will never get back what we have.

Alternatively, we can elect new people who appreciate and value our unique and beautiful community.

But it’s not that easy. It is a David and Goliath struggle.

The incumbents have the developers on their side as well as the taxpayer funded Vantage Point and various other publicly-funded and widely circulated propaganda.

The challengers are ordinary people with kids and jobs. They reach into their own pockets to get their message out to the community.

Fortunately, the Goliaths don’t always win. If we give the Davids a helping hand, the Goliaths won’t win this time.

It is our last chance, our very last chance.
