Dear editor,

Thank you for your willingness to print Ms. Shergold’s charming sequence of commentary on the community of Crossfield.

As a ratepayer she indeed is entitled to her opinions on community happenings, however negative and derogatory she chooses them to be. She is correct, I am throwing my hat in the mayoral ring again this term.

From the time Councillor Jaquish filled out my nomination papers three years ago and persuaded me to run for mayor, through the election process, and after being sworn into the role of mayor, I have been pleased to receive constructive criticism on my performance. Much of the advice has come from my esteemed council and administrative colleagues. I have worked hard, very hard, to integrate the suggestions and ideas for improvements into my efforts as mayor.

It’s been a tremendous life experience and I have indeed been honoured to serve my community. I believe in community and over my tenure, the Town of Crossfield has hosted way more than a dozen community forums and public open houses soliciting ideas and feedback from the citizens.

In fact, we have another one coming up this week – Sept. 8 from 4-8 p.m. at the Community Centre in the Main Hall to discuss and solicit public input into our Municipal Development Plan and Downtown/Entrance Way Redevelopment Plan. As with the previous dozen public meetings we have hosted, we encourage all citizens interested in the future planning of their community to attend and engage in some informal dialogue with us.

I would like to issue a personal challenge to Ms. Shergold if I may. Ms. Shergold has shared her opinions, albeit through a string of hostile letters in the paper and to the Town office, on the manner in which mayor, council and administration have led and operated Town business over the last few years.

I openly challenge Ms. Shergold to reinvest the time and energy she seems to have available to making a difference in her community. It’s election time. After all her ado, we expect to see her name on the ballot.

Mayor Phil McCracken,

Crossfield
