Re: “Lily beetle devastating local gardens,” July 16

Dear Editor,

I recently read the article in the Airdrie City View regarding the Red Lily Beetle in Airdrie gardens. The accompanying photo shows a garden ornament of a Lady Bug, a very beneficial insect.

My concern is that people reading this article who see the Lady Bug may confuse the two and start killing the good beetle in error.

Lady Bugs play a crucial and positive role in the garden and millions of aphids are eaten by them. Aphids are a voracious pest that can decimate gardens.

One lady said to me when she saw the photo of the lady (Judy Cahoon) with the ornament of the Lady Bug, “I thought this is a good beetle not a harmful one.”

A good way to get rid of the Lily Beetle is by mixing vinegar and dish soap with some warm water in a spray bottle and give the plant a good soaking. Also spray the ground under the plant.

After using this method, I found no more of these pests. It is also better for the environment than pesticides.
