Addressing misconceptions about DST

RE: "Against daylight saving," letter, Nov. 6. Dear Editor, I am writing in response to last week's letter from John McMurray titled, "Against daylight saving." My letter is simply meant to correct several misconceptions of the writer, which I believe seem to be prevalent among some Albertans and can be easily clarified. When the NDP announced the possibility of removing the twice-annual clock change, the method they suggested, to which Albertans were invited to respond, was two-pronged: 1) stay on the same time all year, and 2) have that time be DST (Daylight Saving Time). Any individual/organization opposed to either 1) or 2) in the above invitation inevitably had to oppose the entire package. I submit to you that the three organizations which the writer mentioned, that were in opposition, may have been so because of the DST portion. The other glaring, and often misunderstood, fact in the entire discussion has been that, contrary to what many, including the previous writer, have loudly voiced, is this – Saskatchewan is not on perpetual Daylight Saving Time, but rather perpetual Central Standard Time. Therefore, the one-hour difference which is presently in effect, now that we are back to Mountain Standard Time. I hope this helps clear up some of the misconception. Leila Hoffman Division 5
