Welcome to Athabasca County

The Athabasca region is the envy of many other jurisdictions because of its natural beauty and diverse experiences for all visitors to enjoy!

We know that 2021 will have its transitional challenges as our economy rebuilds and a sense of normality returns. I am proud of the efforts that Administration and County Council has implemented to support our ratepayers, business owners, and visitors during this time. Rest assured, as 2021 progresses, services will return to the level you desire.

In the meantime, explore our four-season activities by enjoying the outdoors – snowmobiling, skating, ice fishing! We also have a great selection of walking trails for snow shoeing or skiing, and many areas to reconnect around a campfire.

As the weather warms, we will still have to respect the science of Covid-19. Family day trips to all corners of the County are a great option and a welcome change to weekly routines. In spring and fall canoeing, fishing, boating and other water activities can take place on our many lakes, rivers and streams. The camping options are top notch as well. Enjoy!

There are many memorable things to see and do, all within a short driving distance! From the Regional Multiplex, Fitness and Aquatic Centre to the Nancy Appleby Theatre; fireworks and Farmers’ Markets to visiting the Athabasca University campus and adjacent sports fields; to experiencing historic places like nearby Amber Valley – a Black settlement started in 1910 that was recently memorialized by Canada Post on a stamp. Don’t miss our skate and water parks and beautiful golf courses.

Our communities also offer many choices to stop for a meal, a first-class night out, or a place to rest for the night.

Athabasca County is so enriched because of the great sense of pride and spirit our volunteers and people offer. Find out more by visiting VisitAthabasca.ca. If you are considering moving to our region and starting a business, the Investment Guide created by Athabasca County is a great starting place for information.

On behalf of Athabasca County Council, please be kind, be patient and as safe as possible in your travels in 2021.
