35 HSG - Summer Fishing in Northern Alberta

Alberta really does have something for everyone. Our province is home to wonderful historical sites that document and showcase our Indigenous histories and even our fossilized records of the dinosaurs. We've built great cities with world-class attractions and we host festival after festival all summer. Alberta also has kilometre after kilometre of natural outdoor attractions that would interest just about anyone, and fishers are no exception! Alberta's lakes and rivers have some of the best fishing in the country! For example...

Winefred Lake

Winefred Lake is about 425 kms northeast of Edmonton, ideal for anyone looking to get away from the city for a few days. The lake is fed by three freshwater rivers which helps to create a unique habitat for the fish. The rivers bring in fresh nutrients and food to keep the smaller fish happy and healthy which in turn feeds the larger fish. This makes Winefred Lake a great destination for trophy fishing. Expect to see an abundance of large walleye and pike in the lake, and some smaller fish as well.

For those looking for some great fishing but without the camping, Winefred Lake Lodge offers comfortable and clean cabins available to rent, along with boat rentals. The lodge has 16 ft Lund boats with 20 HP motors so you and your group can freely move around the lake to find the spots where the fish are biting.

Bistcho Lake

One of Alberta's largest lakes, Bistcho Lake is located in the far northeast corner of Alberta, well off the beaten track. Home to a diverse ecosystem of both plant and animal life, it's a wonderful place to get away and enjoy nature...and catch yourself some prize pike, whitefish and walleye while you're at it!

While there are some lodges near the highway, you're not likely to find a lot of traffic near the lake itself so if you're the type looking for a true getaway, Bistcho Lake could be a great choice for you. The lake and surrounding area are provincially managed and regulated and there are catch limits to be aware of so, as always, be sure to look up the local regulations and do your part to help keep this beautiful fishing spot as pristine and natural as possible.

Explore Alberta!

So many of us live and work here but spend our time dreaming of vacations elsewhere, but why? We have some of the most beautiful lakes, rivers, forests and mountains in our own backyards! Alberta has the perfect natural getaway for you and your family right here, you just have to take a look around to find them.
