Today we start with an important website to visit for those looking to respectfully expand their knowledge, understanding, and recognition of Alberta’s Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous Tourism Alberta

No matter where you are in Alberta, you are on land that has an important story. Indigenous Tourism Alberta collects and organizes experiences you can enjoy from the North to the South, from the Rockies to Central Alberta. Guided tours, accommodation, dining listings – everything is here so you can plan and enjoy in-depth educational experiences about Indigenous culture.

Stony Plain & Parkland Pioneer Museum

Spanning 14 beautiful acres, this museum recounts Stony Plain and Parkland County’s agricultural heritage. Walk through the past as you stroll around the site. Wondering what to expect? This is like a smaller version of Fort Edmonton Park; heritage buildings moved to site, farm machinery on display, interactive exhibits, antique collections, and much more.

Carvel General Store

Just a short drive from Stony Plain is Carvel General Store. Although it’s a small shopping destination, it’s also a historic site. The store was founded in 1914. Now, more than a century later, you can shop in the restored building that has all of its original charm. You’ll find a vast array of boutique and small batch products including plenty of local goods. Be prepared to be tempted by local honey and charmed by unique mugs. You will want to get one of each from the vast loose tea selection. You can also purchase books and works from local writers and artists.

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery

Celebrate art and history with a day at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery! Here you’ll find a variety of permanent and temporary exhibits, including one that celebrates the region’s history and growth. The museum also hosts a variety of programs for all ages and has a collection of clothing/textiles, artifacts, and machinery that you can visit in person and online.

Janvier Gallery, Cold Lake Alberta

Alex Janvier is known around the world for his vibrant Indigenous art. The 86 year old continues to paint today, creating original works that tell a story. Janvier works across a variety of mediums to showcase his original style. The gallery is only open by appointment; you can enjoy the works and also shop online.
