Each year, the Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees recognizes students in the division who achieve 100 per cent on their Provincial Diploma Exams. Six students who achieved a perfect result were feted at the May 3 regular meeting.

“On behalf of the staff of RVS, we’re so proud of your accomplishments. We’re glad that we’re a small part of it,” said Superintendent of Schools Greg Luterbach.

Faith Harper from Cochrane High School – who scored 100 per cent in Chemistry 30 – will be continuing her education next year at the University of Calgary. She said she plans to study astrophysics and hopes to someday become a researcher or university professor. Harper also plays in the school band and volunteers at the Cochrane and Area Humane Society.

Helping out in her community is also important to Julia Price from Cochrane High School, who achieved 100 per cent on her Chemistry 30 exam – particularly through the Give Life Challenge.

“It’s a challenge for students across Canada from different schools to see which high school can collect the most units of blood,” she said. “It’s for Canadian Blood Services, to encourage (students) to donate.”

Price is also part of the Sustainable Development Committee at her school and is involved in literacy tutoring. She has also spent time volunteering in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. She plans to attend Dalhousie University to pursue a degree in environmental science and international development, with the ultimate goal of becoming a humanitarian aid worker or researcher.

Chestermere High School student Devyn Young aims to work as a mechanical engineer, and will begin pursuing that goal at the University of Calgary in the fall. Young, who also scored 100 per cent on his Chemistry 30 diploma exam, said the key to his success was hard work and lots of preparation.

“Going through the teachers’ notes and studying old diploma exams – that was really helpful,” he said.

Students were given three hours to complete the exams in previous years, but in January, that time was doubled to six hours. While Price said she didn’t need the extra time, she appreciated it was available.

“It’s nice to know that you’re not rushing and can go back and look back through your test, versus the three hours where you work through it once and you’re done,” she said.

Three students who weren’t able to attend the board meeting were recognized in writing. The three students from Springbank Community High School were Kalaina Kozak with 100 per cent in Physics 30, Nathan Smith with 100 per cent in Math 30-1 and Curtis Ostertag with 100 per cent in Biology 30.

“I think it’s incredible to score 100 per cent, but it’s even more incredible that you are such well-rounded students,” said Ward 1 trustee Shali Baziuk. “The future looks really bright.”
