The Airdrie Christmas parade committee is happy to announce the Airdrie City View and Rocky View Weekly newspapers have signed on as title sponsor for the for the Dec. 7 Santa Claus Parade.

ìThe Airdrie City View is going to be a big asset for the parade with all of the marketing that they can help us withî said Stewart McLeish, committee chair.

ìWe are happy to have a long-standing member of the Airdrie business community joining with us.î

The Airdrie City View is also happy to announce that it is creating a new shopping experience for Airdrie customers to coincide with the parade and the Festival of Lights. Parade of Savings is going to kick off its first year in Airdrie to give shoppers a chance to go out and save on Christmas purchases, shop locally and support local Airdrie businesses.

ìThe idea is to have the residents already out of their houses and shopping for the day and they stay and enjoy the parade at 5 p.m. and then head over to the first Saturday night of the Festival of Lights,î said Airdrie City View and Rocky View Weekly Publisher Cameron Christianson.

Parade of Savings will be a fun-filled day for the whole family. The day will start at City Hall with a grand opening event that includes music, coffee and treats at 10 am.

Then there will be local musicians around the City at various times singing and performing Christmas carols. Check future editions of the Airdrie City View for specific times and participants.

ìWe really hope that the businesses will get behind this day and make this a whole-day event,î said Christianson. ìWe want shoppers to realize that you can find everything on your Christmas list here in Airdrie.î

Christianson is hoping the Parade of Savings will evolve over the years to become a bigger part of a winter festival day with special events throughout the city sponsored by various local groups.

ìWe want to maintain Airdrieís sense of community as our population grows and a day like this will be a great asset to the businesses and shoppers,î said Christianson.

For the past 12 years, the popularity of Moonlite Madness, an event where local stores stay open late one Friday evening in November has fallen off to include only a couple of businesses as Canadaís big box stores have started promoting the American Thanksgivingís Black Friday.

With Parade of Savings being held during the day, businesses are already open and have staff on hand so there is no need to open extra hours or having to pay staff for extra hours.

ìI am hoping with the convenience of having a shopping day during the day and with the parade starting later that day, that people in the area will come out and make this a great day for all,î said Christianson.

Volunteers and parade floats are currently being accepted. For more information about the parade, email [email protected].
