A local teenager donated a bag of stuffed toys to the Irricana Volunteer Fire Station and experienced a life-long dream, June 22.
Jordan Dobko, 17, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was treated to a tour of the station and a ride on a fire truck after making the donation.
“We weren’t expecting the ride, so when they surprised him, he was pretty thrilled,” said mom Debby Dobko. “It made his week.”
According to his mom, it is natural for Dobko to think of other children, so when he was cleaning out his room, he immediately thought of donating the toys to the fire station.
“He is always thinking about other kids and trying to make them feel good,” said Debby.
“He knows a bunch of the guys (at the station) so that is what he wanted to do.”
The toys will be used to give to children in difficult situations, such as at motor vehicle accidents or house fires.
Station 56 Fire Chief Judy Unsworth said it was neat to see how excited Dobko was when firefighters surprised him with a ride on the truck and a demonstration of the tones.
“They were thrilled,” said Unsworth. “The guys were honoured that he would donate his stuffed animals and they were thrilled to make his dreams come true.”
Unsworth was pleased to see how well the 20 fire fighters on duty treated Dobko.
“They were just so gracious with him,” she said.
“He was so excited, it made everyone’s day.”
