A group of Crossfield and area volunteers presented 26 quilts to Jan Wasylyshyn of Operation Peace and Comfort at the Crossfield Legion, June 14.

The quilts will go to injured Canadian soldiers convalescing in Canada and overseas.

“It is an amazing project,” said Robyn Nash, Crossfield group organizer. “It is sad because the young men and women are being injured, but it is nice to know that the quilts are getting to the people who are injured. It is nice to know they are getting that hug from home.”

Wasylyshyn, of Innisfail, founded Operation Peace and Comfort in 2006. Nash started the Crossfield group in 2008, after reading about the original group. The Crossfield effort consists of 10-15 members and meets once a month.

“Sewers and non-sewers alike work on the project,” said Nash. “It takes about 22 hours to make each quilt from start to finish.”

Each quilt is constructed from recycled denim, and volunteers assist in cutting squares, sewing, ironing, clipping seams, washing and drying. The finished quilts feature maple leaves and a Crossfield Fire Department crest.

“They are very beautiful,” said Nash, adding that local groups and companies have showed tremendous support for the group.

“We are not doing it for accolades, we are just doing it because we think it is a wonderful project… and want to give something back to the soldiers. They deserve our thanks and gratitude.”
