Habitat For Humanity golf tourney raises $6,000

An annual golf tournament helped raise $6,000 for Habitat For Humanity’s Monklands housing project in Airdrie, June 25.

An annual golf tournament helped raise $6,000 for Habitat For Humanity’s Monklands housing project in Airdrie, June 25.

Canadian Merchant and Savings Directory hosted the tournament, which saw about 54 golfers tee off in support of the 31-unit building.

“They did a fabulous job organizing the event,” said Habitat spokesperson Andrea Hlady. “I know they’ve increased (numbers) from last year.”

Contests for longest drives, closest-to-the-pin and a silent auction were held. A unique addition was the Golfer’s Marshmallow Drive where players would mark the squishy sugar ball and whack it down the course to see who would have the honour of longest, and softest, drive.

Louise, who asked her last name remain anonymous, was on hand with her two children and spoke to golfers about her experience living in a Calgary-based HFH home.

“It was a real honour to be able to talk to a group of people that are donating to habitat,” said the 38-year-old. “They’ve changed my family’s life so much.”

Stigmas attached to people living in Habitat For Humanity homes are due to a general lack of understanding, according to Louise.

“People need to realize that it’s not for a bunch of people that aren’t working for a living,” she said. “It’s for people who are working and going places.”
