First ever pitch-and-putt added to Sports Day

Irricana is expecting to have one memorable Sports Day on July 10, as a trial run for an even bigger one next year when the Town celebrates its 100th birthday.

This year’s event will include the first annual Putt Around Town, featuring nine holes of golf where no golf ball has ever gone before.

The holes will be strategically placed around town, allowing participants to test their skill using only an iron and putter. The fairways may be a little shorter than normal, but each one will offer its own challenge.

The cost to participate is $10 for adults and $5 for kids, with each golfer receiving nine holes of golf, a pencil and scorecard courtesy of Acme Golf Club. At the end of the day, there will be an opportunity to win some cool prizes. Maps and complete details will be available on Sports Day.

Also new this year is Clock Your Pitch. Minor Ball will be measuring baseball pitches with a radar gun. All funds raised will go toward the purchase of new ball jackets for the kids.

The day will have something for everyone, starting with a pancake breakfast on main street, the parade, a ball tournament, a show and shine, equestrian show jumping, kids face painting and balloons, a climbing wall, ball hockey tournament, beer gardens and fireworks at the south recreation area at dusk.

Grasshopper Gallery, Irricana’s hot new art destination will also be having its grand opening in conjunction with Irricana Sports Day. Pick up the July 6 Rocky View Weekly for full details on all the Sports Day events.

The Summer Reading Program kicks off at the Irricana library on July 3 from 1 - 3 p.m. It is free to all library members and this special day will involve crafts, games, pizza and prizes. Children of all ages are welcome. Kirsten Emmott is the Summer Reading Coordinator, her phone number is 403-935-4796.

In a co-operative effort between the Lions Clubs of Beiseker, Irricana and Keoma, the Purina Walk for Guide Dogs will take place on July 11 at 1 p.m. at Founders Park in Irricana.
