Up to 200 participants are expected to take part in the 10th annual Banded Peak Challenge fundraiser on July 17.

The event, a bike and hike challenge, will help raise money for Easter Seals Camp Horizon, located outside Bragg Creek.

“This fundraiser is an easy way for people to show their support and help send kids to camp,” said Susan Law, CEO of Easter Seals Alberta. “Our event is a truly unique experience, with participants climbing a mountain and taking part in great adventure, all for a worthy cause.”

The challenge takes place in Kananaskis Country and begins with a 13.5 kilometre bike ride to the base camp of Banded Peak Mountain. From there, participants hike five kilometres to the 9,626-foot summit.

Participants can win prizes at outposts along the trail.

Registration for the event is from 5 to 10 a.m. at the Little Elbow recreation area at the end of Highway 66, 30 kilometres west of Bragg Creek.

Youth, families and outdoor enthusiasts are welcome to take part in the event, which raised $40,000 last year.

This year, organizers are hoping to raise $50,000.

Every year, Easter Seals Camp Horizon provides more than 1,000 children with special needs, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, autism, diabetes, Crohn’s and colitis, camp experiences.

Each summer, more than 700 adults and children from across Canada attend the camp, taking part in activities such as river rafting, rock climbing, sleeping outdoors and campfires.
