City View's new intern loves Airdrie

Interning in my own community is the best move I’ve made while working toward a photojournalism diploma at SAIT Polytechnic. I love Airdrie and am blown away by the number of amazing people there are in this community.

Interning in my own community is the best move I’ve made while working toward a photojournalism diploma at SAIT Polytechnic.

I love Airdrie and am blown away by the number of amazing people there are in this community.

In 2003, I didn’t know anyone in Airdrie, but was lucky enough to meet some great friends at a free Community Links program that allowed mothers to gather, learn about raising children, meet other mothers and allow our children to gain friendships at a young age. Those ladies are the people who helped build the foundation I needed to get where I am today, and most of them are still by my side to give advice, a shoulder or a helping hand when I need it. You know who you are – thank you.

Finding a balance between raising two children (Davis and Casey) on my own, going to school full-time at the age of 30 and building my photography business part-time wasn’t easy, but I found it.

One week into interning for Rocky View Publishing I realized just how proud and happy I am. I am proud that I was able to come this far in life after doing everything backward and learning things the hard way. I am proud of my children for sticking it out and understanding that life won’t be this busy forever. I am happy to have such great people surrounding me. And I am happy to be doing something that I love.

Full-time photography jobs are hard to find, but I am confident when I graduate this May, I will find a career that will allow me to use my photography, videography, writing, research, interviewing and communication skills daily.

Until then, I look forward to shooting and meeting more people in my community and the Rocky View County.
