The reunion was well attended with many original members. Everyone appreciated the slide show Dan McKinnon put together that gave us a history of the club. It was interesting to hear everyone’s memories of the club in its early stages and visit with present members and leaders.

It is a pleasure to share another successful year in the Balzac 4-H Beef Club.

At the start of this year, we welcomed many new and returning members.

Our year started off great with our weigh day at Three Cross Cattle Company. The cattle were already looking good and we knew we would be showing some of the best beef in the Calgary region.

Fundraising is always an important part of our club activities. We held a bottle drive and a tire recycling drive this year. With the funds raised, we were all able to enjoy some extra activities and purchase some important items for the clubs.

Grooming day is an important event that gets us all organized and ready for show day. Some get dragged around and eat some dirt – that’s how you know that you still have work to do.

Achievement day was held at Three Cross Cattle Company. We had a great day with everyone showcasing their heifer, steer and cow calf projects. Members old and new all learned something. Of course, 4-H on Parade was held the first weekend of June and this is the highlight of our year. Steers, heifers and cow-calf pairs were well represented in the Calgary region and our club came out looking exceptional. For the first time in years, 4-H on Parade included a hog project. This was exceptionally well done and was under the leadership of our very own Cameron Olson. These pigs added the much appreciated educational component.

4-H on Parade is much more than a project show, it is a demonstration of leadership and teamwork by our members. Everyone was willing to help each other out and learn to work together. We will continue throughout the summer, helping out at the Airdrie Rodeo and hosting an education display at the Calgary Stampede. Some members will be enjoying 4-H camps and seminars this summer. Good luck to all members that have 4-H summer activities and project shows to look forward to.

We will say goodbye this year to three members who have been excellent at sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm of 4-H with all of us. They will definitely be missed. Hayden Miller will be pursuing his education at Olds College. Harley Morrison will be pursuing his education at University of Alberta. Kelsey McGuaig will be pursuing her education in Calgary.

A successful year becomes a great year because of the help that we get along the way. Again, thank you to all of our sponsors, buyers, and community supporters. Thank you to our leaders and parents.
