WINNER: Mary Shearer $8,110

“It was total surprise, almost shock when I got the phone call yesterday. I had forgotten I had donated because I was buying the ticket not with the intent to win, but to support curling.”

With the first day of the championship round underway, we celebrate by congratulating Mary Shearer, the sixth winner of Curling Alberta’s 50/50 Raffle. Mary holds the winning ticket for $8,110.

Curling has always played a key role in Mary’s life as her parents were involved all their lives. “My father was one of the founding members of the Royal Curling Club in Edmonton and my mother was a curler too,” said Mary. “On curling days, one of the mothers in the morning and one in the afternoon would look after all the kids while the other mothers curled. I remember the fun we had in that rink.”

Mary grew up in Edmonton and has lived in quite a few parts of the world. While living in Regina, she played lead in quite a competitive curling league and enjoyed it tremendously. “I curled when I lived in Regina because when you live in Saskatchewan you play baseball, you curl, and you cheer for the Roughriders,” laughed Mary.

Today, she and her husband along with their miniature poodle, are enjoying retirement in Canmore and are following the Tim Hortons Brier closely. “I’m rooting for Manitoba to win, because they are a new rink and they’ve done very, very well. They have some different tactics and I think there is real potential there,” said Mary. “At first I was cheering for New Brunswick because I felt they started well and were from a small province. But, as teams are eliminated, I cheer for another one.”

Mary plans to pay her winnings forward and donate to the Indigenous Women’s Shelter, Awo Taan Healing Lodge Society, in Calgary.
Thank you, Mary, for your generosity and community-minded spirit. It is people like you that truly make a difference in this world. We also extend our gratitude to the thousands of passionate curling fans for supporting the 50/50 initiative during the Curling’s Capital Series of Events. Every single ticket sold goes towards providing opportunities to youth and seniors looking to stay active and remain engaged.

Three days remain for a chance to win big each day. Fans can purchase 50/50 tickets Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM MST and can be purchased here. (LL#570518)
