WINNER: Robbie and Randy Fairhurst $7,065

“I kind of looked up to the sky and said, ‘today’s the day, Dad.’ And last night we won.”

Tuesday, March 9th, was a special day for Robbie Fairhurst. Yesterday was about remembering and celebrating the memory of her father David Vano, who passed away twenty years ago to the day. “Yesterday was the day that Randy and I both said okay, we are going to buy a ticket because of that. I usually buy the $20 ticket package, but I actually chose to do the $50 one because of Dad. I kind of looked up to the sky and said, ‘today’s the day, Dad.’ And last night we won.”

Some things are meant to be. We congratulate Robbie and Randy for winning their $7,065 share of Tuesday’s 50/50 jackpot. “I’m excited. Very excited. I found out last night and went running down the stairs yelling. My husband looked at me and asked if I was okay,” laughed Robbie. “I told him ‘we won, we won!”

Big-time curling fans, love of the game runs strong in the Fairhurst family. “Growing up in Calgary, we used to go to the Calgary Curling Club with my dad every Saturday and watch him curl,” remembers Robbie. “After that we would go upstairs and get a hamburger, fries and gravy. So, we kind of grew up with all of that.”

That love of curling has been passed down to both her son and her seven-year-old grandson, who are heavily involved in all things curling related.  Whenever they visited Calgary from their home in Medicine Hat, they could be found cheering their grandson on at his learn to curl program at Huntington Hills Curling Club with the wonderful Coach Barb.

Robbie and Randy are currently enjoying retirement and are looking forward to planning a fishing trip with their winnings. “Dad used to love fishing as well, so it all fits,” adds Robbie. “Yesterday couldn’t have been a better day. That’s how we sort of honored him and he must have heard us.”

In true curling spirit, Robbie wanted to recognize the volunteers, officials, ice technicians, Curling Alberta, and Curling Canada for all their efforts to make events like the Tim Hortons Brier possible, especially in such challenging times.

Cheers to the memory of David Vano, for sharing his love of the game and passing it down from one generation to the next. Thank you to Robbie and Randy, as well as the thousands of passionate curling fans for supporting the 50/50 initiative during the Curling’s Capital Series of Events. We are grateful for your ongoing support to create a lasting legacy for our sport and curling communities across Alberta.

Tickets for the 50/50 draw are available for purchase each day until March 14th, from 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM MST and can be purchased here. (LL#570518)
