WINNER: Fred Edwards $7,425

Fred Edwards is known in the Alberta curling scene as a member of Team Goehring based out of the Glencoe Club in Calgary. He opted to support both the sport he loves and the club he grew up in, by purchasing a ticket in Curling Alberta’s Share the Love with Your Club campaign. With Sunday’s jackpot at $14,850, Fred will bring home $7,425 and a portion of the other 50% of his ticket purchase will directly support the Glencoe Curling Club.
Curling plays a fairly significant role in Fred’s life. “I learned how to curl at the Glencoe and have curled there ever since,” said Fred. “It’s my go-to winter sport and I’ve loved it every one of those 27 years.” Since the age of 10, he competed at the junior level and went on to put together various men’s teams. For the last eight years, he has played second on Team Goehring, and went on to represent Alberta at the 2019 Canadian Curling Club Championships. “To get the coveted Alberta crest, for us club curlers it is huge,” adds Fred. “I’d never won a provincial championship in any sport before and that was incredible.
Following their national championship experience, Fred was keen to get back on the ice with his team and compete in the men’s provincial tour events as well as both the Calgary and Airdrie Super Leagues. Despite the abrupt end to their season, the community at the Glencoe Curling Club is close-knit and the connections remain strong even in the post season. “What I love about curling and golfing at the Glencoe is that it’s the same community,” said Fred. “When the ice comes out and it gets sunny, we transition over to the golf course. When fall hits, we get back to curling.”
Outside of curling, Fred is a Structural Engineer specializing in restoring and rehabilitating historical buildings. With two young children at home, Fred and his family are looking forward to summer vacation. “We just recently purchased a trailer and are going to try the camping thing with the kids and see if they take to it.”
