WINNER: Marjorie Roy and Frank Poirier $5,950
“I am just so super excited and over the moon with it. I’m excited because as a 50/50 draw, half of the money goes to such a good cause. I know that it is well needed and will be well used.”
Last week’s Zoom call with her seven siblings was full of discussion about the Brier and led Marjorie Roy to enter the Share the Love with Your Club 50/50 raffle. The fact that it was community driven and would directly benefit a local curling centre made it even more appealing.
“I buy tickets to support organizations, such as Curling Alberta. I never expect to win. I never do,” said Marjorie. “I buy because this will help – and maybe I’ll win.”
That “maybe” turned into a big cash prize Saturday night, and we congratulate Marjorie and her husband, Frank, for winning $5,950 in the Share the Love with Your Club raffle and thank them for supporting the Didsbury Curling Club.
Growing up in northeastern Saskatchewan, Marjorie grew up curling and continued in her community league after moving to Alberta. A knee injury and eventual replacement sidelined her from the game, but she continues to be a curling fan, though not to the same degree as her avid-curling-fan family. Marjorie and Frank’s sport of choice is golf, and they are eagerly awaiting the opening of their home course, the Oxbow Country Golf Course near Strathmore.
While Frank is semi-retired, Marjorie still works full time for H.J. Baker in sulphur marketing. Volunteerism is a high priority for both, and they are actively involved in the Pineridge Community Association where Marjorie serves as president. The high note of 2021 so far has been welcoming their first grandson in February and they are greatly looking forward to spending more time with him as restrictions ease up.
Finding out that they had won Sunday morning was fantastic feeling and Marjorie couldn’t quite believe it. “I am just so excited and over the moon with it,” laughed Marjorie. “I’m excited because as a 50/50 draw, half of the money goes to such a good cause. I know that it is well needed and will be well used, especially to help young curlers.”
