Crossfield resident spearheads supply drive in support of Ukraine

A Crossfield resident has announced he is spearheading a medical and hygiene supply drive in support of those affected by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia’s military began an invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, resulting in what is being deemed a humanitarian crisis with more than two million Ukrainian residents fleeing their home for the safety of neighbouring territories and countries, according to the United Nations.

Crossfieldian Ryan Bradley Luciow, seeing the “heartbreaking images” and stories of those fleeing conflict from Ukraine, was prompted to do something to help.

“Not knowing where you are going with what you can carry, no hotel reservations, no warm home, really no idea what’s waiting for you or what will happen when you get there – I felt I had to try and do something,” he said.

Luciow posted on a Crossfield community Facebook page earlier this week, calling for all Crossfieldians who are willing and able to donate to the cause, to drop off personal hygiene kits and medical supplies at his home at 644 Harrison Court, where a donation bin will be set up.

Alternatively, he said he can arrange with prospective donors to pick up the supplies directly prior to March 20, when he will be dropping off the donations to Medical Mercy Canada Society – a Calgary-based non-profit organization.

Accepted donations include feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, toiletries, medical supplies, and more.

“This is important to our local town and community,” he said. “Several people have mentioned pulling something together to try to help out in any way we can. Our little town really is amazing at pulling together and helping out when needed.

“A lot of these poor people have nothing left, and at the end of the day it’s the least we can do.”
