Under 150 active COVID-19 cases in Airdrie, 14th death reported

As more local businesses are allowed to resume as of Jan. 18, Airdrie has reported fewer than 150 active cases of COVID-19, along with its 14th death resulting from the virus.

As more local businesses are allowed to resume operations as of Jan. 18, Airdrie has reported fewer than 150 active cases of COVID-19, along with its 14th death resulting from the virus.

According to airdrie.ca, there have been a total of 1,679 cases of the virus in Airdrie. Of those, 148 are considered active and 1,517 people have recovered. The only Airdrie-based facility on the Alberta government's list of COVID-19 outbreak locations is the Bethany Care Society retirement home. 

Starting Jan. 18, outdoor social gatherings of up to 10 people are allowed as long as everyone wears masks and keeps at least two metres apart, according to Alberta Health Services. Indoor gatherings are still not allowed. 

Personal wellness services like salons, barbershops, aesthetics, reflexology, tattoo and piercing studios are allowed to reopen on an appointment-only basis. The capacity for funeral ceremony services will be increased to 20 people.

As in-classroom learning continues, there are currently no Airdrie schools with listed outbreaks posted on the Province's COVID-19 school status map

Outside of Airdrie, according to the COVID-19 regional status map, Rocky View County (RVC) is reporting 86 active cases, which is an increase of seven since Jan. 16. On the east side of the county, Chestermere is now at 45 active cases, while on the west side of RVC, Cochrane is reporting 44 cases.

Provincially, there have been a total of 116,837 cases of COVID-19 in Alberta as of Jan. 16. Of the total cases, 12,234 are considered active, 103,167 people have recovered, 738 patients are in hospital and 123 Albertans are in intensive care units. In total, 1,436 deaths have been reported in the province due to the virus.

On the vaccination front, provincially there has been a total of  85,935 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of Jan. 16, according to Alberta.ca. This equates to 1,943 doses per 100,000 population. Sixteen adverse events following immunization have been reported to Alberta Health and AHS since the immunization program began.
