Tax relief extended for Airdrie property owners

Airdrie property owners that are hurting as a result of COVID-19 will be able to defer their municipal and education tax payments following a decision by Airdrie City council.

At a regular meeting April 20, council unanimously approved an amendment to the Tax Penalty bylaw that allows the payments to be deferred until October. Normally, they would need to be payed by the end of June.

"Relief is being recommended for all property owners by extending the penalty-free period for everyone by a further three months, out to Oct. 1," said Tresury Manager Shannon Schindeler. "Calgary and Red Deer have recently announced these same extensions."

As per the amendments, property owners are able to cancel their monthly tax payments and re-join the plan later in the year when they are financially able.

"We are, however, encouraging anyone who can remain on the monthly payment plan to do so, in order to avoid large catch-up payments at the end of the year." Schindeler said.

The Tax Penalty Bylaw will come back to council in May, Schindeler added, and the City still plans to mail taxation notices by the end of the month.
