Looking for normal

With most Albertans staying home and practicing physical distancing due to the global pandemic, many are also thinking about how to stay sane while we wait for normal to show itself again.

If you’re on social media, you will have seen posts from friends and family about how they’re organizing their back porches, sorting through their Tupperware and watching YouTube videos on hairdressing – most of us will need a haircut soon.

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL) we’d like to point out that even though the facility is closed, we are open online.

You can apply for a library card, or renew an expired one, and even stave off the perils of boredom and the inevitable doldrums of being housebound by taking advantage of our 24/7 online resources.

APL has way too many of them to list in this column, but here are a few that will hopefully bring some normalcy to your time with your fellow pandemic inmates.

You’ll find them under the “eResources” tab on the APL website.

PressReader is an online newsstand that provides access to electronic copies of more than 7,000 newspapers and magazines from 120-plus countries in more than 60 languages.

We’re talking Maclean’s, Time, Alberta Outdoorsman, People and thousands more from all over the world.

RBdigital provides access to more than 3,700 digital magazines and 6,000-plus eAudiobooks.

Here to, popular magazines like National Geographic and a bevy of comic and audio books are listed in the thousands.

For the kids, CloudLibrary and Flipster are two resources that explore the world with magazines like Owl, Chirp and Brainspace, novels such as Dragon Hoops and If We Were Giants, and nonfiction like Mine Crafter and Weird Science Jokes.

We are far from what was normal, but access to these resources and many more can help while we all wait for normal to return.
