Details provided for Genesis Place reopening

The City of Airdrie has announced dates and other details for the reopening of Genesis Place Recreation Centre.

According to a post on airdrie.ca, the recreation complex will begin its phased reopening plan July 6 by allowing access to its fitness centre. The aquatics centre, gymnasium, field house and arenas will follow suit July 13. The dates for the return of permitted programming, such as swim lessons or group fitness classes, have not yet been confirmed.

"Facility users can expect changes to our physical spaces as well as amenity-specific procedures for both employees and guests to follow," the website stated. "We all play a role in keeping our collective community safe. Further details on what you can expect when arriving at Genesis Place will be sent out prior to opening."

Directional signage and area floor markings have been installed to assist users in navigating the facility, according to the City. Users will be asked to check-in at the facility's health assessment tables and may be required to provide a health assessment.

Once amenities are back up and running, Genesis Place will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Users aged 60 and older will be given priority on Tuesdays from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of August.

"This is an additional option for those included in a more vulnerable demographic," the City stated. "Individuals 60+ years and individuals with health concerns are welcome to use the facility at any time during the week."

The City has implemented a new booking and registration process for the fitness and aquatics centres. Users can register a week in advance, which means aquatics registration opens July 6. While reservations are mandatory for the pool, they are optional for the fitness centre.

"Please remember to scan your pass when you arrive at the facility or you will be directed to our Customer Service desk to pay your drop-in fee or renew your pass," the City's post said.

Registration is done through a myAIRDRIE account. Users must scroll down to the Recreation, Programming and Facility Booking tab, where they can select "Register for Courses."

From there, users will come down to a Drop-in Reservations section, where they may choose the category they wish to book for. They will then click "Register" on the day and time they wish to attend the facility.

Those with questions about booking a spot can call 403-948-8804 or email [email protected].

According to the City, passes will not automatically begin on a specific date. Credits for programming or classes that were cut short when the facility closed in March have been put on the user's account. The credits can be put towards either future registrations or a refund.

"Our customer service team will be connecting with all pass holders and presenting options to reactivate, continue to suspend or cancel your facility pass," the City's post stated.

To limit the potential spread of COVID-19, the City is asking visitors to Genesis Place to adhere to what are now commonly known public health measures, such as maintaining at least two metres of physical distance, sanitizing your hands before and after your visit and staying home if you are feeling unwell.
