Airdrie City Hall has been closed until further notice, as the municipality continues trying to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Staff are still working remotely and are available by email or by phone – residents are encouraged to call 403-948-8800 or use MyAirdrie for any necessary questions or transactions.

The City also made the "extremely tough decision" to lay off 184 casual employees March 20, according to a press release. Due to the closure of facilities like Genesis Place, Ron Ebbesen Arena, Plainsmen Arena, the recycle depot and Bert Church Theatre, the municipality was faced with a shortage of work to satisfy the available staff hours.

“We do not take the decision to part ways with any of our staff lightly. We have heavily weighed all options in the effort to make the right decision with the information available to us,” City manager Paul Schulz said. “We will continue to monitor needs across the organization and feel this action is in the best interest of the employees and our organization.”

The decision to provide layoff notices right away was an effort, in part, to give employees the option of applying for assistance being provided by the provincial and federal governments, the release stated.

“In this time of mass uncertainty, we are doing all we can to manage the needs of our business and the community to get through this difficult time,” Schulz said.
