Airdrie reports 66 active cases as Alberta enters Stage 2 of 'A Path Forward'

Airdrie has reported 66 active cases of COVID-19 as of March 2, the day after the Alberta government entered Stage 2 of its 'A Path Forward' plan to ease public health restrictions.

On March 2, Premier Jason Kenney announced some additional indoor fitness restrictions would be eased, along with the reopening of public libraries at a capacity of 15 per cent occupancy.

"We're not out of the woods but we can continue taking small steps forward as we go into Step 2," the premier said during his update.

In terms of indoor fitness, Albertans can now partake in unsupervised, low-intensity individual and group exercises by appointment only. Additionally, mandatory physical distancing of three metres is required between participants at all times, and masks must be worn at all times by trainers and those participating in low-intensity activities.

Low-intensity exercises, according to the Province, include weightlifting, low-intensity dance classes, yoga, barre and indoor climbing, as well as the low-intensity use of treadmills, elliptical machines and other cardio-related equipment.

Cases locally, according to figures posted on Airdrie.ca, continue to fluctuate in the mid-60s on a day-to-day basis. Of the 1,894 total cases reported in the city so far, 1,811 Airdronians have recovered from the virus and 17 deaths have been reported.

Across the province, according to alberta.ca, 257 new cases of COVID-19 were identified on March 2. The new numbers mean there were 4,631 active cases in Alberta as of yesterday, and a total of 134,052 cases since the pandemic began.

According to the Province, 127,531 Albertans have recovered from COVID-19, 261 patients are in hospital with the virus and 54 Albertans are in intensive care units. In total, 1,890 deaths have been reported in Alberta from COVID-19.

Cases are currently confirmed in two Airdrie schools. According to the provincial COVID-19 status map, École Edwards Elementary School and Herons Crossing School are each listed under "alert" status, meaning they have reported two to four cases each.

Outside of Airdrie, Rocky View County (RVC) was reporting 20 active cases as of March 2. Regarding schools around the County, Khalsa School Calgary Educational Foundation is on the COVID-19 school status map under "outbreak" status, with five to nine active cases. Springbank Middle School has also been added to the list under "alert" status, with two to four cases.

On the east side of RVC, Chestermere reported 24 active cases as of March 2. Rainbow Creek Elementary School is listed under "alert" status on the government's COVID-19 school status map, while Chestermere Lake Middle School is listed under "outbreak" status. 

Cochrane's COVID-19 numbers remain the lowest in the region, as the area reported 12 active cases as of March 2. 

On the vaccination front, As of March 1, 245,054 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered in Alberta. To date, 88,539 Albertans are fully immunized with two doses of a vaccine. Since vaccinations in the province started, 116 adverse events following immunization have been reported to Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services.
