Twinklefest returns to Crossfield for fifth year

Crossfield’s Amery Park will shine bright with Christmas lights and plenty of holiday cheer Dec. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m., during the town’s fifth annual Twinklefest.

According to Christina Waldner, Town of Crossfield’s communications and research officer, the event provides residents a chance to enjoy everything the park – located on the western edge of town – has to offer.

“We have a bunch of events planned for the evening and it’s just a great way for residents to gather together,” she said.

“Families come out, meet with neighbours and everybody has a good time together. Crossfield is really good for that – there’s a strong sense of community out here.”

The frosty fun will include a bonfire, cookies and hot chocolate, as well as entertainment in the form of music and a visit from Santa Claus.

“We also have two horse-and-wagon teams that will take visitors for rides around the park,” Waldner said, adding if weather permits, the outdoor rink will be open for ice-skating.

Along with the activities, attendees can admire the many trees at Amery Park, which will be adorned with bright Christmas lights.

“It wouldn’t be Twinklefest without some twinkle,” she said.

The event is free, but Waldner said attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or a toy for the Crossfield Christmas Hamper Program.

“[The hamper program] is put on as a joint thing between a bunch of different entities, but the Crossfield Fire Department is a large component,” she said, adding donations for the program are currently accepted at the Crossfield ATB Financial, as well as the library.

The Town of Crossfield started Twinklefest in 2015, with the first iteration, which included the Crossfield Agricultural Society’s Christmas light contest. While the contest is no longer a part of Twinklefest, the event has increased in popularity, according to Waldner. She said last year saw roughly 100 people attend, despite frigid temperatures.

“It’s a great way for people to come out and take part in a free event while still supporting the Christmas hamper program,” she said. “Have some fun and hot chocolate – hopefully, it won’t be too cold.”
