While film and television projects have been on hold during the pandemic or, at least, making tenuous steps towards restarting productions, the very real fear of running out of new screen entertainment is striking the hearts of viewers everywhere.

A joke making the rounds lately is that the writers of the hit TV program The Walking Dead were already prepared for a global pandemic.

While that may elicit a chuckle, fiction writers – who are no strangers to the concept of isolation – not only imagine all sorts of realities, but they keep pounding the keyboard even when their film and TV counterparts grind to a halt.

in an article published in Yale University News in April, writer Mike Cummings wrote, “Whether they’re holed up at home or working on the frontlines, people crave diversions from the unfolding crisis.

“Many turn to streaming services...others prefer to switch off their screens and dive into a good book.”

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we offer all manners of digital diversions through our robust e-resources, such as cloudLibrary, Freegal, Hoopla and RBdigital, which allow library card holders to access digital versions of books, audiobooks, movies and music.

However, patrons can also switch off their screens and stop by the library to pick out a great book. Doing so can help carry them away from the daily slog of dealing with the ongoing pandemic.

Our Popular Picks section, supported by Lanark Landing, features the latest and most popular choices based on publishers’ print runs and what APL patrons have recently been asking for.

A few of these include The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See, Kushner, Inc. by Vicky Ward and a James Patterson novel, Triple Murder.

Of course, those are just the Popular Picks. APL boasts nearly 80,000 fiction and non-fiction books in stock, ranging from mystery to romance, astrophysics to true crime – whatever your interest or fancy.

Your library has the diversion you need. Learn more about APL’s collection online and in the facility at www.airdriepubliclibrary.ca
