Last year’s TD Summer Reading Club (SRC) saw seven weeks of exploding watermelons, erupting volcanoes, clever robotics, zany circuitry and exciting literacy adventures.

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we love the thrill of mixing science, tech and play with literacy, and this year’s SRC is no different.

This free program – sponsored by the Toronto Dominion Bank – celebrates Canadian authors, illustrators and stories, and is designed for children who, this fall, will be entering kindergarten to Grade 7.

This year’s theme is The Natural World, which means we will be exploring everything cool about the planet we live on and the outer space it travels through.

Plants, space, oceans, camping and, yes, volcanoes, will be on the agenda this summer.

The literacy adventure launches June 15 with the TD Get Your Summer Read on Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Go on an adventure throughout the library and fill out your own passport for a chance to win a prize.

And while you’re here, you can sign up for the SRC program as a registered, casual or read-on-your-own participant, with the program running from July 2 to Aug. 16.

If you can’t make it this Saturday, online registration also begins the same day.

Developed and delivered by more than 2,000 public libraries across Canada, this flexible program – which can easily fit into most family’s schedules – will inspire young readers to explore the fun of reading throughout the summer.

Drop in at the library or go online to see our new Summer Program brochure for more details.

APL will host its Annual Canada Day BBQ, open to the public immediately following the parade, from approximately 11 a.m. to at 1:30 p.m.

Tickets go on sale June 10 for fabulous hamburger or hot dog meals (including chips and water) for just $5, courtesy of Save-On-Foods.

Purchase your tickets in advance and be entered to win a family pass to the Royal Tyrell Museum.
