RVC students recognized for perfect diploma marks

At the Board of Trustees’ Nov. 14 meeting, Rocky View Schools (RVS) recognized eight students that scored 100 per cent on one of their diploma exams last June, including six from Rocky View County (RVC) schools.

Three of the bright young test-takers hailed from Cochrane High School, with one student from Chestermere High School and two from Springbank Community High School.

Springbank senior Liam Squires, who earned 100 per cent on his Math 30-1 diploma, said he was excited to discover he had aced the exam.

“I knew I could do it, so I made it something of a personal challenge,” the 17-year-old said. “It was really nice to see I was able to.”

Squires said math is among his favourite subjects, and added he ramped up his preparations for the diploma exam in the two weeks leading up to the test.

“We had a lot of time in class to do review, so I was able to get some studying in during those last two weeks,” he said.

While he said he didn’t have a particular study strategy, he aimed to ensure he had a solid comprehension of the course concepts.

“I would quickly review everything and I was pretty much able to tell whether I understood [a concept] or not, or if I needed to do a deeper dive,” he said.

Squires, who said he plans to study engineering at university next year, wasn’t the only student from his Springbank math class to ace the diploma – his classmate and friend Ming Li also recorded 100 per cent.

Li said he took a cautious approach while writing the test.

“During the exam, I did it very carefully – I double-checked every question on that booklet,” he said. “So, I was expecting this score, but I was still very happy to receive it.”

Li said he studied math for roughly one hour per day in the lead-up to the exam, while also watching math tutorials on YouTube whenever he could.

“By the end of the semester, we had pretty much covered all the contents in class, so it was specifically just about review,” he said. “I maintained the same amount of study time [throughout].”

Li said his goal next year is to attend the University of Toronto, where he plans to pursue a degree in electrical engineering.

He added he wanted to thank his math teacher at Springbank, Shawn Carder, for helping him with the subject throughout the semester.

“Whenever I had math questions, he would help me and discuss them, even if it was during lunch time or not during his regular work periods,” Li said. “He’s a very friendly teacher and his relationship is close with his students.”

From Chestermere, Emily Trew showed her knack for the sciences by scoring 100 per cent on the Chemistry 30 diploma. Trew was no stranger to what RVS deems the “100 per cent club,” having been recognized in May for scoring 100 per cent on the biology diploma last year.

Cochrane High School students who were recognized for earning the perfect mark included Chloe Heck, Makenna Kuzyk and Brady Church. Heck and Kuzyk each scored 100 per cent on the biology exam, while Church aced the Math 30-1 diploma.

RVS’s next 100 per cent achievement presentation will take place in May 2020 for diploma exams that were written in January.
