You can almost hear the collective sigh as 2020 fades away like a bad dream.
No, the pandemic is not over, and our facility is still closed, but we here at Airdrie Public Library (APL) continue to offer our programs on Zoom and as pre-recorded versions that can be accessed anytime through our website.
We have several new programs happening this January, Including Paws, Feathers, and Scales, which, as its name suggests, is crawling with critters.
APL’s popular annual Family Literacy Day, which usually happens in the building, will be held virtual this year.
Featuring a special Sing, Read, Rhyme and a Family Literacy Day edition of ARTSaturday with Jaye Benoit, we’ll also have a variety of pre-recorded videos on our website of activities designed for families with children of all ages.
For the teens, we have a Digital Escape Room, a Dungeon & Dragons Group and Take and Make, which is a program with do-it-yourself projects that participants pick up through our curbside service and then make at their leisure – or with others via Zoom.
APL also has a variety of clubs, author readings, and career and job search programs for adults, plus what we think is a unique country-wide digital book club. The club, called One eRead Canada, may be Canada’s first national, bilingual (English and French) digital eBook club. It boasts more than 600 participating libraries across the country.
The book selection is author Kim Thúy’s celebrated novel, Vi, published by Penguin Random House Canada. The book will be available through your library card in eBook and digital audio across platforms in both French and English, with simultaneous access starting Jan. 1.
An initiative of the Canadian Urban Libraries Council, there will be two live streaming events with Thúy, one in French and one in English, available through a Facebook group page that will also host discussions of themes, characters, and overall impressions of the book throughout January.
