One of the key priorities of Airdrie Public Library (APL) is to provide opportunities for school-aged children and teens to connect with each other and with literature.
Raising readers is one of the most important influences a parent or caregiver can have in a child’s life. Not only does literacy improve their educational opportunities, but it exposes them to a world beyond what they might experience in their community.
Here at APL, we look for ways to make reading a great personal and group experience.
One of the ways to encourage literacy as a group experience is through the 2023 Young Reader’s Choice Awards (YRCA).
Administered by the Pacific Northwest Library Association, YRCA is the longest-running youth choice award in North America, and APL is once again pleased to promote this exciting program.
Participants are children in grades 4 to 12 in Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, and Washington.
Check out this year’s titles on the Marigold Library System’s website, read at least two nominees in each division and pick your favourite to be eligible to win an awesome prize pack.
There are three divisions – junior (grades 4-6), intermediate (grades 7-9) and senior (grades 10-12). But you can read and vote in every division, no matter your grade.
Voting is now open and continues until Saturday, April 15, so participants have time to read and make their choices.
Winners are chosen for each participating library, and voting is easy. Just go to marigold.ab.ca/YRCA. There, you’ll find a list of the three divisions, the nominated books, and the voting buttons.
All the books are available at APL, either off the shelf or by placing a hold.
So, not only do youth get to have fun reading from a great selection of books, but they have a voice in deciding who wins.
