Anyone who grew up watching the long-running educational television program Sesame Street will fondly recall the catchy tune The People in Your Neighbourhood. Sung by Bob McGrath, along with a host of puppets and sometimes with celebrities such as Martina Navratilova and Ralph Nader, it focused on the various jobs and occupations that could be found in a child’s neighbourhood.
The waste collector, the baker, the teacher, the mail person...you name it. The adorable Muppets introduced young viewers to the people who come in and out of their lives every day.
Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we have an exciting program called Community Helpers that begins at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28. It follows the same educational ideas found in the Sesame Street song but without the puppets and with a definite Airdrie angle.
Who are the workers in your child’s neighbourhood? Designed for preschoolers, each session will feature stories about a worker, a craft or an activity, and questions are always welcome.
To start with, we’re highlighting veterinarians. Is your little one an animal lover, or do they talk about what it would be like to be a veterinarian? Fen Vet joins us for a special storytime, and they’ll have some furry friends on whom children can practice animal care. Register online for this event, and keep a look out for another Community Helpers program in the New Year.
Also happening at APL: Check out the art on our walls from Airdrie’s internationally acclaimed artist Veronica Funk, featuring her "Extraordinary Women" exhibit. Please stop by and view her fantastic collection of 60 seven-by-fourteen-inch paintings depicting some of Canada’s most inspiring women.
