Library Link: Postcard to the library

Libraries are happy places for several reasons – the programs they offer, the collections on the shelves, but most often, it’s because libraries are for everybody.

Airdrie Public Library staff were pleasantly surprised when they received a hand-drawn and coloured postcard from a young patron named Willow.

We love a great story here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), which is a good thing, because we have a lot of stories on our shelves.

The current library facility has around 80,000 items in our collection, with access to millions more online. The new facility, scheduled to open in 2025 at the site of the old Airdrie fire hall on Main Street, will have even more in-house items – about 160,000.

That is bound to make a lot of people happy.

Speaking of happy, APL recently received a homemade postcard in the mail from Willow, a young patron of ours.

Addressed to “The Librarians at Airdrie Public Library,” the postcard had a beautifully hand-drawn and coloured flower on the front with the words, “You’re amazing!”

We don’t usually get postcards, and this one made our day.

On the back of the card Willow wrote:

You have the coolest job in the world! I want to be like you when I grow up. You make so many people happy when they borrow books or even games. You bring joy to people when they see your beautiful faces. Thank you! Willow.

Willow is correct in saying that librarians have the coolest jobs. When you work in a library, you are privy to special moments in patron’s lives.

You see children grasping early learning concepts; you watch the eager minds of youth as they dive into design or science projects; and you get to assist teens and adults as they explore new ways and opportunities for improving their education and job prospects.

And that’s just a tiny slice of what happens in a library.

Thank you, Willow, for taking the time to draw your flower and write your kind words, and for reminding us that we are the luckiest people in the world.
