Library Link: Overheard at the library

With our fall programs in full swing this week, it’s time to take a breather and present a little column that we here at Airdrie Public Library (APL) call Overheard at the Library. We do this once a year, and as the title suggests, it means we’ve been listening in on your moments of excitement and discovery at the library.

Airdrie Public Library staff say they often overhear tidbits of interesting conversation as they go about their business.
With our fall programs in full swing this week, it’s time to take a breather and present a little column that we here at Airdrie Public Library (APL) call Overheard at the Library.

We do this once a year, and as the title suggests, it means we’ve been listening in on your moments of excitement and discovery at the library.

Let’s start with the children:

“Oh, this is a special day,” a boy cheered as he and his father entered the Children’s Area.

“Yay! All the books are still here!” yelled a boy as he ran into the library.

His mother said it was the first time they had been in the facility since last Christmas.

“I have a dump truck, mommy, it makes me happy,” said a little girl surrounded by toys on the play rug.

“Mommy, Gil-burt is dead,” (this from a young girl peering into the Reading Fish’s aquarium).

He wasn’t dead by the way. It’s a little weird, but our Reading Fish likes to sleep belly-up.

Youth and teens:

“I haven’t read this yet,” said a youth holding the third book in Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy.

“Don’t. John dies,” her friend said quickly.

When asked why he was coming to the library almost daily in August, an older teen explained, “I have three younger brothers, and they’ve trashed my work twice.” He was upgrading his math before the new school year and one of his younger brothers had been colouring on his work sheets.

Adults:

A mother of three when told she learned she could borrow up to 100 books with her new library card: “Oh, that’s good, that’ll keep them occupied.”

And lastly, from a senior when asked why he had borrowed one of APL’s iPads for ages 55 plus: “My son says it’s time I get with the program.”

Libraries are filled with books, but they are also bubbling over with excitement, discovery, and opportunities. We love to capture and present these moments.
