Library Link: Magazines for kids

As Airdrie Public Library’s (APL) spring programming comes to an end this week, we’d like to highlight our children’s collection as we wait for our exciting summer programming to launch.

In the so-called digital age, it’s easy to forget that not everything has made the ubiquitous transition to the alluring world of bits and bytes.

Children’s literature, in particular, still has a very strong presence in the analogue world. APL’s collection of children’s literature, which includes everything from picture books to young readers to clever and very entertaining tween lit, continues to grow, and sees a high circulation among our young patrons.

Even during the pandemic, we’ve added hundreds of new titles to our children’s and youth literature collections, including a selection of actual, physical magazines.

Print isn’t dead yet, and as long as humans remain the tactile creatures that we are, actual printed material will remain with us.

Our periodical collection holds classics like Owl, Chirp, and ChickaDEE, which parents might even remember with some fondness from their own childhoods. These brightly coloured and smartly designed monthly page-turners are crammed with hours of games, fun activities, and age-appropriate and informative stories.

However, they are also available online, often coordinating between the two media, offering young learners an interactive immersion in both the physical world – the magazine in their hands – and the digital world.

With your free library card, you can check the magazines out and take them home for three weeks, or you can log onto the library’s website, navigate to Flipster and enjoy the digital version of any of these and many other magazines with no holds, no checkout periods and no wait lists.

It’s a great way to continue reading and learning while our programmers prepare for a summer full of literacy at APL.
