Library Link: Live, read, laugh with Airdrie Public Library

Laughter is the physical manifestation of finding something funny, which is something we all do as humans. No matter where you’re from, your culture, or even your personality, you've probably lost yourself in laughter a few times. Even the grumpiest of us will allow a chuckle to escape occasionally.

Airdrie Public Library boasts plenty of comedic books for readers to enjoy.
John Cleese, of Monty Python and Faulty Towers fame, has an interesting take on the humanizing effect of laughter.

“I’m struck by how laughter connects you with people. It’s impossible to maintain any kind of distance or any sense of social hierarchy when you’re just howling with laughter,” he said in a segment of the 2001 BBC series, The Human Face.

Laughter is the physical manifestation of finding something funny, which is something we all do as humans. No matter where you’re from, your culture, or even your personality, you've probably lost yourself in laughter a few times. Even the grumpiest of us will allow a chuckle to escape occasionally.

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we love a good laugh, which is why we have a huge selection of books, comics, and movies devoted to humour.

Take, for instance, An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good, a funny, irreverent story collection by Swedish author Helene Tursten, who is famous for her Detective Inspector Irene Huss series. The summary says it features two-never-before translated stories that will “keep you laughing all the way to the retirement home.”

Or there’s children’s author Nancy E. Krulik’s Lice Check, part of the George Brown, Class Clown juvenile fiction series.

Then there’s the icon of Canadian humour, Stewart McLean. We have his Vinyl Café Unplugged, Home From the Vinyl Café, Secrets From the Vinyl Café, and many more of McLean’s print, audio, and DVD works detailing the lives of his fictional characters.

Of course, we have plenty of humourous graphic novels and comics, from Archie to Bogart Creek to The Swamp.

Not to be outdone by the printed or digital page, we also have a huge selection of DVD and Blu-ray titles that offer age-specific humour.

No matter whether you’ve read a laugh-out-loud book, or watched a silly movie with friends, as John Cleese observed, laugher connects us all to a shared human experience.
