Library Link: Literary resolutions

This year, we’re hitting our resolution hard and early with our Family Reading Club.

Family Literacy Week returns to Airdrie Public LibraryS this January.

Every New Year, we are compelled, whether through media or family pressure, to resolve making a resolution for the coming year.

The tradition of making a New Year’s resolution is said to have begun in ancient Babylonia 4,000 years ago, though their new year began in what we'd consider March.

The day was also celebrated in ancient Rome, after Julius Caesar mucked about with the calendar and established January 1 as the beginning of the new year.

Over time, various religious traditions have contributed to the day being a time to forget last year’s mistakes, with a resolve to do better.

While the tradition is mostly a secular practice these days, it continues to be popular.

Here at Airdrie Public Library (APL), we’re starting off 2023 with a resolution to continue making literacy as available as your free library card. The dark and chilly days of January are the perfect time to make this happen with Family Literacy Week, which runs from Jan. 22 to 29.

This year, we’re hitting our resolution hard and early with our Family Reading Club.

Starting Jan. 9, stop by the library and pick up a Bookopoly game board and mark off each action item as you read with friends, family, coworkers, classmates, or anyone you choose.

You have until Jan. 27 to complete the card and bring it to the library for a chance to win a cool prize.

To wrap up Family Literacy Week, join us on Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon for Camp Share a Story.

This fun-filled family event celebrates the love of shared stories around a campfire.

Don’t worry, we won’t be lighting a fire in the library, but there’s sure to be lots plenty of warm-hearted fun as we keep our resolution.
