Kathyrn’s Alex Mettlewsky says he’s proud to have worked on the upcoming film A Gentleman, premiering in Calgary Oct. 30

Kathyrn actor Alexander Mettlewsky is proud to be included in the cast of A Gentleman, a film which explores the impact of sexual abuse, premiering at Calgary’s Global Theatre Oct. 30. According to Mettlewsky, A Gentleman – directed by Brock Davis Mitchell and written by Sarah Hutchings – is the story of two high school athletes who suffer sexual abuse at the hands of a coach. The film explores the dynamic between the two young men as they learn to cope with their experiences, and the effect the abuse has on their relationship. “It’s really about how a troubled youth will be a catalyst to, basically, a poor experience for the rest of your life,” Mettlewsky said. In the film, Mettlewsky plays a supporting role as one of many characters feeding off the energy of the protagonists. Mettlewsky’s role is a somewhat cautionary tale against staying silent. “We don’t really help either side of the conflict,” he said. “We’re kind of just bystanders in an ever-growing system of oppression of the boys.” Mettlewsky said he secured the role after sending in a video audition to Mitchell. While he’s had previous acting experience as an extra, this is Mettlewsky’s first supporting role. “This is the first time I’ve had a character with lines, a character who’s kind of central to the story in some aspects,” he said. “It’s a new experience that I’m actually very glad to have on my resume.” Despite the heavy subject matter, he said he had a good experience on set while filming in Okotoks and Calgary. The entire cast and crew got along well, Mettlewsky added, bonding over the process of making the film. As reports and allegations of sexual misconduct more frequently make their way into the news, Mettlewsky said the film’s message is important. The story is based on the experiences of writer Hutchings, and Mettlewsky said he believes the film allowed her to express her grief over past traumas in a healthy way – while conveying a message of hope in the face of darkness. Mettlewsky also praised the decision by Mitchell and Hutchings to give all proceeds of the ticket sales to Kids Help Phone and Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre, both of which assist victims of abuse and trauma. “I think the director and [Hutchings] both decided on that as a way to not only make people feel good about coming to the premiere, but also the fact that they can support other victims of this sort of thing,” he said. “Hopefully, with that, it will bring to light a lot of things that people may not want to bring to light because they’re scared.” Tickets to the premiere of A Gentleman are available at eventbrite.ca
