For the second year in a row, Davis Chevrolet marked Giving Tuesday by providing five donations to five separate local charities.
On Nov. 30, as part of the company’s Giving Tuesday initiative, representatives from Davis Chevrolet handed out cheques of $2,021 each to representatives from the Airdrie Food Bank, Airdrie and District Victims Assistance Society, Airdrie Meals on Wheels, North Rocky View Community Links, and the BGC Airdrie youth club. The five cheques amount to a total of $10,105.
“We wanted to give them a donation, mostly due to COVID and the increasing need they are faced with,” said Glenn Smaha, general manager of Davis Chevrolet, who added the five charities are all cornerstones of the Airdrie community.
“They’ve been here ever since we came to Airdrie nine years ago,” he said. “They’ve been here prior to that. Each of them plays an integral role in making sure our community has the resources available to those in need. We just feel they do it best.”
Held on the final Tuesday of November, Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a counter to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping initiatives that fall after the American Thanksgiving holiday. Instead of a consumer focus, Giving Tuesday intends to shift the focus toward the value of non-profit groups and charities.
Smaha said Giving Tuesday has become an important date, both for him personally as well as other employees at Davis Chevrolet.
“For me personally, I have a really strong sense of service,” he said. “With that comes a strong sense of giving back.
“Community is at the roots of my history, coming from a small town, as it is for the Davis family. Looking at it from Davis Chevrolet perspective, Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity for us to show our support to the community that supports us and make sure it stays strong.”
