Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area (BBBS) has indefinitely postponed its annual Bowl for Kids Sake event in Airdrie March 15, and is looking into similar actions regarding the March 22 event in Cochrane.

"With growing public concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, many organizations, including ours, are taking steps to help ensure the health and safety of staff, families, volunteers, and our clientele, including event participants like yourself," read a statement provided by BBBS March 13. "Your health, and the health and well-being of your own families, is, and will remain, paramount."

While the current risk level for contraction in Alberta remains low, the statement read, the organization recognizes public concern is high – as such, the letter states, it is "best to be over-cautious" by doing whatever possible to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in the area.

"As such, we have made the decision to CANCEL Bowl for Kids Sake Airdrie for March 15," the statement read. "In the coming weeks, we will look into our options to potentially reschedule our event, and we will be in touch with you early next week to discuss next steps. We certainly don’t want your efforts to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters to go uncelebrated."

According to Kate Middleton, development officer with BBBS, the organization will consider postponing future events scheduled in Cochrane and Okotoks and will provide an update when decisions have been made.

"We thank you for your continued support and understanding during this time," the statement read.
