Better Business Bureau warns of 'free roof inspections' scam

With warmer weather on the horizon, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning against roofing scams.

According to a press release, this spring, BBB Scam Tracker has already received reports of suspicious “free” roof inspections that homeowners should be on the lookout for.

BBB states con artists often use the name of the state or province with "Roofing" or "Construction" attached at the end. The roofer will offer a free inspection, claiming their company is working on a neighbour's home and is offering inspections to those living nearby.

“If you ask questions about where the business is located or how their services work, you’ll most likely be met with vague answers, or, if you are speaking on the phone, they may simply hang up," BBB's release stated.

“If you accept the free inspection, the 'inspector' shows up at your house, and if they don’t find enough wear and tear to merit a whole new roof, they may fabricate it by tearing off shingles to mimic wind damage. Or they may simply show you pictures of someone else’s damaged roof."

According to BBB, roofing scams can be avoided by being wary of unsolicited offers. Most scams begin with a contractor who claims they "just happened to be in the area."

Another tip from BBB is to get your insurance company to inspect your roof before signing any kind of paperwork or contracts with a roofing company. Filing a claim through insurance goes on your record and could affect future claims or your continued coverage.

Researching roofing companies before you hire them is also recommended, BBB stated, adding company business ratings can be found at BBB.org

“Keep a close eye on previous reviews and any complaints other consumers might have had,“ the release stated. “This is one of the best ways to know if a roofing company is reputable or just a cover for a scam.“

If you’ve been the victim of roofing scam, report it on BBB Scam Tracker immediately, as your report will help alert others to the risk.
