Citing poor ticket sales, Kevin Fraser of the Airdrie Gaelic Society (AGS) confirmed this week the yearly event would not take place as planned on Jan. 28.

The Airdrie Gaelic Society hosts the annual Robbie Burns Day event, but due to poor ticket sales, opted not to host the event this month.

The Scottish poet Robbie Burns once famously said, “The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley (often go awry).”

Sadly, that sentiment rings true for Airdrie’s annual Robbie Burns Night.

Citing poor ticket sales, Kevin Fraser of the Airdrie Gaelic Society (AGS) confirmed this week the yearly event would not take place as planned on Jan. 28. Fraser told the Airdrie City View he did not know why they fell short this year after a successful event in 2022.

Robbie Burns Day is celebrated among the world’s Scottish community every year on the birthday of the famed poet on Jan. 25, and the Airdrie event is intended to capture that same Gaelic spirit.

The event stands in as a celebration of all things Scottish, including the reading aloud of Burns' poetry, highland dancing, bagpipes, kilts and traditional haggis served with the meal.

It has been a tradition in the city for years. Fraser said the AGS would likely try again next year to keep the tradition alive even if this year is a write-off.
