Airdrie RCMP offers tips for a safe Halloween celebration

It's that time of year again – time to decorate your homes with black and orange, don your favourite costume, and eat a surplus of sugary treats.

It's that time of year again – time to decorate your homes with black and orange, don your favourite costume, and eat a surplus of sugary treats.

But while people may look to throw caution to the wind and have a carefree holiday celebration, the Airdrie RCMP is offering some tips and tricks to stay safe this Halloween.

According to Cpl. Gina Slaney, media relations officer for the detachment, when out trick-or-treating, children should always be accompanied by an adult, and their costumes should be easily visible at night.

Slaney said parents can add a reflector or some glow sticks to their child's costume to make them more visible.

"Children should [also] trick-or-treat in well-known areas and only go to houses that are well lit," she said in an email statement.

She added candy should be inspected by an adult to ensure that it hasn't been tampered with. If the wrapping looks suspicious or is partially opened, throw it away,  Slaney added.

Road safety is [also] very important, she said.

"Kids should walk on the sidewalk and only cross the street at intersections or crosswalks," she said.

"And of course, look both ways before crossing the street."
