Airdrie Public Library launches 'Book Bike'

A new Airdrie Public Library (APL) initiative will take the facility's books on wheels this summer.

A new Airdrie Public Library (APL) initiative will take the facility's resources on wheels this summer.

Starting in July, APL is launching the Book Bike – a mobile pop-up library that will see staff cycling around the city with a trailer full of books in tow.

Eric Pottie, the programming and customer engagement manager for APL, will be the staff member in charge of the new initiative, and the employee who will most often be seen riding the Book Bike throughout the summer.

“I describe it is a pop-up library that is powered by a bicycle,” Pottie said. “What it will be is a bike that pulls a little trailer, and in the trailer will be library materials. I’ll bring an internet hot spot so I can sign people up for library cards. People will be able to check out the materials I have there and we’re looking at doing some small-scale story times.”

Pottie said the Book Bike will provide APL another method to engage and connect with Airdronians this summer and grow the library’s presence within the community. He said he’ll be able to talk about the library’s programs and initiatives when curious passersby approach him on the bicycle.

“Obviously, the library is a cornerstone of the community, but you have to come to us,” he said. “You have to know where we are, look up our hours and plan it all out to be there.

“We’ll be able to do that [with the bike]. I won’t be able to take returns, but I’ll be able to get into the public and get the library out of the library and into our parks and public places, so people can see us and take advantage of the library without having to come over here.”

According to Pottie, the electronic bicycle that APL is using for the Book Bike this summer was purchased from local bike shop Cranked. He said APL was pleased to be able to support an Airdrie-based business through the new program.

He added Airdrie residents should expect to see the Book Bike rolling through the city’s parks and pathways on nice days this summer, as well as at community events like the Airdrie Farmers Market on Wednesday afternoons and at local youth sports tournaments on the weekends.

“It’s kind of growing that awareness and it’s a cool idea,” he said. “It’s an eco-friendly way of getting out and just a neat initiative to connect with everybody.”

While most of the Book Bike's materials will be catered to younger kids, Pottie said there will still be books for readers of all ages to check out.
